TUFI/AETB-8 Diffusion Layer

Name: TUFI/AETB-8 Diffusion Layer
Database: NASA Ames Thermal Protection Materials
Category: Silicon-Based Reusable Composites: Rigid Ceramic Tiles
Composition: 2.5% SiB4, 77.5% (5.75% B2O3, 94.25% SiO2), 20% MoSi2
Manufacturer: Boeing, United Space Alliance (USA)
Technical Readiness Level: 8
Last Modified: 2001-10-01

Description:

  • The TUFI/AETB-8 diffusion layer is the layer material with variable density just below the TUFI external surface that occurs in AETB-8. It has been proposed in many other areas prone to damage, but is not currently being used due to the thermal conductivity of the substrate and the cost of redesign and installation.

Notes:

  • 1. Value represents the average density through the TUFI layer. Actual density varies through the coating layer.
  • 2. Specific Heat predicted using rule of mixtures and data from an ASTM handbook.
  • 3. Room temperature value is measured. The higher temperature values are extrapolated
  • 4. Predicted based on arcjet and or flight test data
